ECMWF and ESA are organising the fifth workshop on Machine Learning for Earth Observation and Prediction, which will be held from 13-17 April 2026 in Bologna, Italy.

Machine Learning (ML) is increasingly being used to observe and predict how the Earth system behaves. The scale, complexity and sophistication of these ML technologies have also increased considerably over the last few years.

The in-person meeting will provide an up-to-date snapshot of the state of the art in this rapidly evolving field. It will also be a forum of discussion and interaction among scientists and practitioners about the current opportunities and challenges presented by the use of ML technologies for Earth system observation and prediction.

The workshop will discuss hybrid ML-physics based systems and end-to-end ML approaches for data assimilation and weather and climate prediction. It will explore new ways to apply ML to Earth system observations and examine how high performance and emerging computing technologies can accelerate these applications. Participants will also look at the role of ML in building digital twins of the Earth system and share strategies to make these models more accurate and efficient.

Registration for in person participation closes on 31 January. intelligence and Earth Observation: from Innovation to Services
“Artificial intelligence and Earth Observation: from Innovation to Services” is a two-day hybrid workshop taking place on 9-10 March 2026 (09:00–17:00 CET), in Brussels and online.

The event brings together Copernicus and DestinE users, Earth observation and digital service providers, policy makers, industry, academia and IT experts to explore how the rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning is transforming the way Earth observation data are developed, delivered and used.

With more than a decade of Copernicus data now available, the convergence of AI/ML, High Performance Computing, big data and Digital Twins is opening the door to a new generation of applications and services. The workshop will focus on how these innovations can be translated into operational, trustworthy and policy-relevant services, while addressing emerging user needs and expectations.

The programme will feature high-level keynote talks, technical briefings, panel discussions and live demonstrations, with a particular emphasis on AI-driven innovation, responsible use of data, and synergies between Copernicus and Destination Earth (DestinE) in view of the upcoming MFF 2028-2034.

The workshop is hosted by the European Commission Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS), with support from the Space Research Unit of HaDEA.
